Nashville-based singer-songwriter Phillip LaRue returns to our blog for the third time since January, and it’s safe to say he’s on a roll. Whenever we see his name pop up in our submissions, we’re quick to start writing, even before hitting play. And once again, LaRue delivers, this time with a deeply emotional new release, “Amen.”
Rather than the usual acoustic guitar, this indie folk track opens with soft piano keys, setting a melancholic tone. LaRue’s heartfelt vocals come in with the line: “I watched you fly away like a kite in the wind,” and knowing that the song is about his grandmother’s battle with dementia, it’s hard not to get emotional. While love and heartbreak are common themes in music, it’s rare to hear someone open up so vulnerably about a grandparent. Just 15 seconds into “Amen,” and it already hits straight to the heart.
