Vicky Farewell, before she started her career as an artist, was a pianist, a songwriter, and a sideman and later on, a producer. She has writing credits with stars such as Childish Gambino and Anderson .Paak, which may sound like a dream job – being surrounded by the studio and working with stars. But Farewell realized something was missing: her own voice.
Farewell, who has a background in classical piano, was also inspired by the shiny ‘90s pop songs and church hymns she listened to. These influences contributed to the flexibility that defined her as a musician. It was with the Free Nationals while being in Dr. Dre’s studio, and writing for .Paak’s GRAMMY-winning Ventura that she found her voice and freedom from the conventional hit-making formula.
